Wolfsburg sack Freddie Ljunberg and Andries Jonker as Arsenal legend is shown the door after less than a year at club

Gunner helped save Germans from relegation last season but has received marching orders after poor start to campaign

ARSENAL legend Freddie Ljunberg has been sacked by Wolfsburg following the departure of boss Andries Jonker.

The former Gunners star was part of the backroom staff at the Volkswagen Arena after joining earlier this year.

Ljunberg assisted Jonker through a turbulent 2016/17 campaign which resulted in a tense play-off win against Eintracht Braunschweig to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.

But after winning just one of his opening four matches in the new campaign, Jonker and all technical staff have been dismissed by the Wolfsburg hierarchy as they look to avoid another bottom-three battle.

Managing director Wolfgang Hotze said: “The decision is anything but easy for us.

“It was not only the recent impressions of the Stuttgart game, but also the stagnation in the development of our team, which was newly formed in the summer.

“We thank Jonker and his training team for what they achieved with Wolfsburg last season, but we have finally come to the conclusion in our internal deliberations.”

Whoever gets the job will surely be expected to rise through the standings and battle for a European finish after a big summer of spending.
