Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp could lose Emre Can on a FREE because they cannot agree on a release clause in new contract

The Merseyside club began negotiations on a new deal with the German international in June last year, but they are yet to agree on a deal.

LIVERPOOL could lose Emre Can on a free because they cannot agree on a release clause with the midfielder.

The Reds took advantage of a release clause in the German's contract to sign him for just £9.75m from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014.

It was, understandably, considered a snip for one of the Bundesliga's top talents as he made the move to the Premier League.

But now he is in the final 12 months of his contract, and despite Liverpool prepared to make him one of the club's higher earners, they are not prepared to insert what they feel to be a low release clause.

But the alternative is the established German international leaves for a free in the summer.

This may force Liverpool to cash in on him when the transfer window reopens in January.

Jurgen Klopp has called Can’s predicament “not too cool” but has been boosted in his hopes the player will stay due to his form so far this campaign.

Liverpool rejected a £23m move for him from the Juventus on deadline day.

But Juve boss Max Allegri confirmed they will go in again for his services in the new year.

The Italian giants can officially open negotiations in January and tempt him with an offer to leave after four seasons on Merseyside.

There has been no agreement despite Kop bosses wanting fresh terms tied up months ago.

Liverpool exploited a release clause in buying the German star from Leverkusen back in 2014.

His exit would leave a gap but Reds have signed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita joins from RB Leipzig next term.

Manchester United and Chelsea could also throw their hat into the ring to sign the versatile player.
