But Ozil has allayed fears that he is set for a long spell on the sidelines by posting a message to his fans on Instagram.

He captioned a selfie: "Good news: I’m back training on the pitch.

"As you might have heard I’m suffering from a minor inflammation of my knee.

"Feeling better each day now and hope to be back playing very soon!"

Tonight's Carabao Cup game will, however, come too early for Ozil.

Jack Wilshere will start in his place, with boss Arsene Wenger saying it will be "a dream" to see him back to his best.

The injury-hit midfielder is set to make his first Arsenal start for 16 months against Doncaster tonight after returning as a substitute against Cologne in the Europa League last week.

Wilshere, 25, who broke his leg while on loan at Bournemouth in April, will be one of a string of Wenger changes following Sunday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Asked whether Wilshere can finally fulfil his potential, boss Wenger said: "It's a dream for all of us.

"I gave Jack his start at 17 years of age — that means I am convinced. You have to be convinced, to play a boy at 17 years of age, that he is a special player.

"He IS special but we are all the same in that you need health to work.

"If you ask me, 'Is he back to his full, 100 per cent potential?', I would say no. But he's not far away. The rest now can only be gained by competition.

"He is determined to get his place back in the team. There is a big fight there and that's what we want."

Gunners striker Danny Welbeck is set to be out for a month after suffering a groin injury against Chelsea.
