And talk of relegation has quickly been replaced by Europe by some excited supporters.

But captain Lascelles, who has scored the winner in Newcastle's last two games, said: "People will think we’re fourth and get carried away.

“It’s good to be happy and I am pleased for the team but, at the same time, we do have a long way to go.

“I think the main thing for us, like last season, is to keep our heads down and work hard. We will keep listening to the boss.

“He will think the same as me, we know we have to prepare and keep working hard.

"We don’t want to get carried away and think that we are flying because that won’t achieve anything. We must stay humble."

Matt Ritchie, who has provided the assists for Lascelles' two headed goals, has also echoed his skipper's sentiments ahead of their trip to the Amex.

The winger insists Newcastle's only target is to reach 40 points, which would secure safety.

Ritchie, 28, added: "You’d be very naive to look at the table now and get excited.

“For the fans, they can look at it and be proud, but we’re five games in and have nine points on the board.

"We need to hit the 40-point mark before we start getting carried away.

"Like any team, we want to do that as soon as possible.

"At the minute, the table looks rosy, but it’s a long season and there’ll be a lot of ups and downs.

"We need to make sure that we continue to improve and stay focused on the job in hand.

“We’re now where we want to be, but by no means have we achieved anything yet."
