Everton boss Ronald Koeman warns Wayne Rooney’s team-mates to keep out of trouble after veteran striker’s drink-drive ban

Dutchman tells players in his squad to remain on their best behaviour and focus on turning round poor start to season

EVERTON boss Ronald Koeman has warned his players to stay out of trouble following Wayne Rooney’s conviction for drink-driving.

The former Manchester United and England captain has been banned from getting behind the wheel for two years after he was pulled over by police while intoxicated.

Rooney will also have to work unpaid community service and has also been fined £300,000 by the Toffees.

But boss Koeman has reminded the rest of his squad to remain on their best behaviour in order to fully focus on turning around Everton’s poor start to the season.

He said: “I speak to every player about all the football, on the pitch, off the pitch, and it’s not particular to Wayne – it’s all my players.

“I know the social part of life, the private life, about behaviour and discipline in the team and outside. It’s not more about Wayne or somebody else, it’s the whole picture.

“(Rooney’s incident) is already the past. The biggest impact was when it happened and the next few days after that, and in that time, he was also playing.

“We can keep going about Wayne and what happened. I think it’s the end of the story.

“He’s said enough about this, and it’s not up to me to continue talking about what happened with Wayne.

“We need to focus on the football, that’s what we need to do. He had a day off on Wednesday. He was in the stadium and he did a session on Thursday morning. He looked good.

“He’s focused on his football. Okay, he needs to deal with all that happened around him, but if it’s like before, it will be no different with Wayne.”
