Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola could splash even more cash on full-backs with injured Benjamin Mendy needing replacing

PEP GUARDIOLA is set to spend even more money on full-backs after Benjamin Mendy’s horror injury.

The Man City boss splashed out £133million on three defenders in the summer but could now dip back into the January market after his left-sided ace was crocked.

Danilo joined from Real Madrid for £27m, Monaco cashed-in when Mendy left for £52m and Tottenham let Kyle Walker swap Premier League rivals for £54m.

And now, because of Mendy’s long-term knee injury that will keep him out for months, the Etihad boss is considering another spending spree in 2018.

Guardiola is sending Mendy to his see his favourite doctor Ramon Cugat  and will then plot how to replace the star defender.

Guardiola said: “The day after tomorrow he is travelling to Barcelona, we are going to see finally how he is.

“Our first impression will be a little bit long out of the pitch. But wait until Thursday.

“By then I am pretty sure it will be longer than we expect, than we would like.

“As happened last year with Ilkay Gundogan, I feel really sad for him.

“For the way we want to play, we will lose a lot.

“Obviously he’s a unique player, for the joy he gives in and out the pitch, it’s going to be a major setback."

When asked if the club would use the upcoming January window to shop for a Mendy replacement, the City boss said: “We will see in January.

“We thought next summer about looking for another replacement at left-back, we will see what we do, we have alternatives in our squad, Fabian Delph, Danilo, Fernandinho, and (youngster Oleksandr) Zinchenko, we will see as we go along.”

The summer transfer window was one the craziest we have ever seen.
