Everton in talks with Idrissa Gueye over new deal as Premier League rivals circle
Gueye has been outstanding on Merseyside since his move from Aston Villa last year and Everton are keen to open talks about a new deal to ward off Arsenal
EVERTON are planning to offer Idriss Gueye a new deal to ward off interest from Arsenal.
The Daily Mail report the midfielder could be rewarded with a bumper new deal after becoming a big hit on Merseyside
Chelsea were reportedly monitoring his situation in the summer, but the 28-year-old has established himself as an integral part of Ronald Koeman’s plans and the Toffees will be keen for him to commit long-term.
The Senegal international moved to Goodison Park from Aston Villa last year, with his stand-out displays during his 35 appearances alerting the Premier League big boys and clubs on the Continent.
The Gunners could still look to move for the former Villa star in January to beef up their midfield.
Despite some improved performances recently, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is still to be convinced he can fully trust Granit Xhaka.
Wenger openly criticised the Swiss international for a “stupid mistake” that led to the only goal of the game in the defeat at Stoke last month.
He said after the Stoke loss: “This is a kind of night when you are angry because not only did we not score for the number of chances we had, we made stupid mistakes centrally – first by losing the ball and then we didn’t defend properly for the goal.”
If Gueye was to extend his stay at Goodison Park on improved terms, it would be seen as a huge boost as Koeman has watched his side struggle in their opening six league games, winning just two matches.
The Toffees had to come from behind to see off Bournemouth on Saturday thanks to a brace from forgotten man Oumar Niasse.
