Gareth Southgate admits Dele Alli’s middle finger gesture could leave England red-faced as Fifa ban decision looms
England boss admits Three Lions risk looking like a 'shambles' after including Alli in their squad for upcoming qualifiers
GARETH SOUTHGATE admits England risk “looking a shambles” after calling up Dele Alli despite the threat of a Fifa ban.
The Tottenham midfielder is being investigated for his middle-finger gesture during England’s home win over Slovakia earlier this month.
England had hoped Dele, who could be suspended for the upcoming qualifiers with Slovenia and Lithuania, would find out his fate yesterday — but they now expect Fifa to deliver their verdict today.
Boss Southgate said: “We run the risk of looking a shambles because he could be withdrawn again.
“But our hope is that common sense prevails and he is available for the matches.”
Southgate also revealed he has spoken to Dele, 21, about his future conduct.
He added: “These are young guys and their world is complex in that it’s in the full glare of publicity.
“The thing now is understanding and they are the sorts of things I talk to him about.”

Meanwhile, Southgate opened up on his decision to include Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph, explaining: “We think he’s a really good player.
“He hasn’t had as many games as we’d like but we need alternatives in midfield.
“He was very important for Roy, he’s been unfortunate with injuries and limited chances.
“We need more competition for places in midfield and we think he can provide that. We look forward to working with him.”
