Colback and the manager were reportedly caught up in a bust-up last month on the club's training ground.

The ex-Sunderland man had already been training away from the first-team when he was summoned by Benitez to replace a player who took a knock.

Colback refused to do which "infuriated" the Spanish tactician.

He has been since training with Newcastle's reserves and ended up staying after turning down the chance to move on loan to Wolves or Hull.

Benitez then named the ex-Sunderland player in his 25-man Premier League squad.

Yet Colback's omission from yesterday's 2017-18 squad picture is a further sign that his St James' Park days are numbered.

Meanwhile Newcastle are planning contract talks with Rafa Benitez in a bid to improve their manager's strained relationship with owner Mike Ashley.

Benitez's deal expires at the end of next season but the Magpies want to tie him down long-term.

Ashley wants to sell the club and knows the guarantee of the prestigious former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss coming with it will keep it closer to the £230million asking price, report The Times.
