Shelvey, 25, picked up the injury yesterday and was whisked to hospital for X-rays.

He was found to have fractured a finger and had a plaster cast put on last night.

The injury should not force Shelvey out of action as footballers are allowed to play in casts as long as they are  lightweight.

That will be a relief for Magpies boss Rafa Benitez after Shelvey impressed in last Sunday’s draw against Liverpool, his first start since the opening-weekend defeat to Tottenham.

Shelvey's mishap comes in the week financier Amanda Staveley met Toon chiefs as she steps up her interest in a takeover.

She also went into the Newcastle boardroom to speak to senior club officials after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

The Yorkshirewoman, 44, has not spoken to current Magpies' owner Mike Ashley so far.
But her communication with the Sports Direct tycoon’s sidekicks confirm she has real interest in Newcastle.

Ashley values the club at around £400million but Staveley has yet to make an offer.
