The 23-year-old’s contract stand off with the Kop alerted Juventus who admitted they did make a move for the midfielder in the summer window.

Corriere dello Sport claim Manchester United could step in ahead of the Serie A side as boss Jose Mourinho looks bolster his midfield options.

It is not clear if the German would be seen as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick who penned a new 12 month deal in the summer.

Can featured for his country in the 3-1 World Cup qualifying win against Northern Ireland on Thursday.

Can’s all-action style would complement United’s other midfield options in Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

The fierce rivalry between the clubs means a January switch would be almost impossible.

So if Can wanted to make the controversial move to Old Trafford, then it would have to be as a free agent at the end of the season.

If there has not been a breakthrough in contract talks by January, the former Bayer Leverkusen man is free to sign a pre-contract with overseas clubs in January.

Can joined Liverpool for £10million in 2014 under Brendan Rodgers and he grown to become an integral part of the club’s plans and boss Jurgen Klopp will be desperate his fellow countryman stays on Merseyside.
