Ex-Newcastle and Everton ace Steve Watson lands first management job at Gateshead

EX-NEWCASTLE star Steve Watson has landed his first management role with National League Gateshead.

The experienced former defender will replace Neil Aspin, who has agreed to take over relegation-threatened Port Vale in League Two.

Watson, 43, played over 500 games for five clubs - including the Magpies and Everton before retiring in 2009.

He has been a No2 at at Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and Macclesfield Town since hanging up his boots.

Gateshead currently lie 16th in the National League, with the new boss taking charge of his first game in an FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at Buxton on Saturday.

The Tynesiders are without a win in five games, with interim boss Micky Cummins losing 2-1 to Bromley on Saturday.

Toon academy graduate Watson played for Kevin Keegan's all-action side and played in the 1998 FA Cup final under Kenny Dalglish.

He also enjoyed spells at Aston Villa, Everton and West Brom before finishing his career at Sheffield Wednesday.
