Arsenal hero Paul Merson preparing to make debut for Welsh fourth-tier side Caerau aged 49

The ex-England international is waiting for international clearance to play for Caerau after becoming friends with the club’s secretary.

The TV pundit is aiming to make his club debut on October 18 in a rearranged match against Pontyclum.

After the Gunners, Merson played for Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Portsmouth before winding down his career as player manager of Walsall.

The ex-Arsenal playmaker then made appearances for Tamworth, Whitton Athletic and Welshpool Town.

Caerau secretary Dai Hooper has done the work to sign the veteran and he believes his appearance on the television is enough of a fitness test.

Hooper said: "I texted him last week about the rearranged fixture with Pontyclun and he said 'I can make that.

“So we're hoping now that the international clearance goes through because obviously he played in England.
