He is currently in charge of Chinese Super League club Hebei Fortune.

However, the experienced chief has shot to the top of his country's wanted list as they begin the search for a new leader.

Juan Antonio Pizzi quit his job this week following the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup finals.

Pellegrini, who managed City to a Premier League title and to two League Cup triumphs, is a close ally of Chile FA president Arturo Salah.

And his representative has added more fuels to flames on the potential return from the Far East to the coach’s homeland this morning.

Agent Jesus Martinez said: "Manuel is under contract until 2018 and happy in his job. But for him Chile are more than a club.

"He would not leave for any other club or other national team, but Chile is special.

“It is sentiment over professionalism.”

But any potential deal would set the Chilean FA a hefty fee.

Martinez added: "The buy-out clause in his contract is around £6milion, but it is decreasing the nearer he gets to the end of his contract."

Nicknamed The Engineer, Pellegrini joined City from Malaga in 2013.
