West Ham want Hartlepool teen starlet Connor Simpson… dubbed ‘the new Andy Carroll’

The 17-year-old is 6ft 5in and left-footed, and has already made his debut

WEST HAM are trying to sign the ‘new Andy Carroll’ – Hartlepool teen sensation Connor Simpson.

The 17-year-old striker, who scored on his first senior start last month, has drawn comparisons to Carroll because he is 6ft 5in and left-footed.

And it is Carroll’s current club who are leading West Brom and Swansea in the race to strike a January deal.

The Hammers hope to nab Simpson, who is yet to sign a professional contract, for just £60,000.

But that fee would rise substantially if he made it into their first team.

Simpson was born in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, and does not turn 18 until January.

He made his Pools debut in League Two last season as a substitute at Cheltenham.

Simpson bagged his first goal in a 3-1 National League win over Maidstone on September 2.

He has made two further appearances for Craig Harrison’s men so far this term.

Carroll, 28, has started three games for West Ham this season after missing the start of the campaign through injury.

The Hammers have picked up two key wins in that time and the striker is convinced he could be a threat at international level.

He told Sky Sports: "I am confident of what I can do and it is different to what they have got at the minute. I am fully confident of my ability."
