And United's Premier League rivals could be set to pounce for one of their best young talents if they are unable to convince him to stay.

The Mirror claim there are 14 clubs who have suddenly shown an interest in the highly-rated keeper - many of them in the top flight.

Tottenham, Southampton, Watford, Stoke and West Brom are the other clubs said to be on the trail of Henderson.

The 20-year-old is currently out on a season-long loan deal with Shrewsbury after an impressive loan spell at Grimsby last season.

Henderson has impressed hugely with the Shrews, who are currently top of League One and unbeaten this season.

But his existing deal with United runs out at the end of the season, and now he is considering his options as he looks to make the step up to regular first team keeper.

Henderson knows his opportunities may be limited at Old Trafford with David De Gea in front of him.

So if talks with the club do not provide him with a good idea of a pathway into the first team, he is understood to be keen to find a club elsewhere.

Should he reject the new contract on offer from United, it would leave him free to find a club elsewhere.

But as he is under the age of 24, and clubs in England would have to pay a compensation fee under Fifa guidelines.

That fee may not be applicable of Henderson decides to join an overseas club, with only solidarity payments being needed.

And Portuguese giants Benfica are another side who have made their interest known.

Benfica are no strangers to picking up young English talent, having signed England youth star Chris Willock from Arsenal in the summer.
