Liverpool’s history-makers arrive back in England after 7-0 Champions League thrashing of Maribor

LIVERPOOL arrived back on Merseyside following their spectacular 7-0 win over Maribor in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp's side flew back to England and arrived back in the wee hours after their stunning triumph.

The margin of victory was so impressive it leaped into the top five biggest wins in the competition's history.

But it was not even the club's largest winning gap - with their 8-0 win over Besiktas in 2007 still the greatest.

Meanwhile stars Philippe Coutinho, Joel Matip, Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson could all be seen wearing Liverpool's grey tracksuit tops and dark joggers as they strode back to the bus at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Two goals apiece from Mohamed Salah and Firmino and further efforts from Coutinho, a first club strike from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold completed the Reds' best away victory in Europe.

After one win in eight matches, having created but not converted numerous chances, Klopp saw signs they had learned from their experience.

Klopp said: "How we finished these situations was good, we were cool enough.

"Often this season we have been alone in the box and not relaxed enough to play the right pass but this was different.

"We showed how good we can be and we never gave up. It was a good all-round performance. It has to be to win 7-0 of course."

Klopp felt the win would help lift some of the anxiety, which was growing after a difficult September.

He added: "It will give the players a lot of confidence.

"I was told about the record after the game and I didn't know about it.

"The wonderful history of this club can feel like a back-pack at times so it is nice to write our own good piece of the history.

"It will be difficult to beat that record. It is quite rare to win 7-0 but it showed we did unbelievably well.

"When you don't score it is a challenge to stay confident but we will try to use this result now.

"The next game is Tottenham so it's pretty likely it will not be a similar result. We have five days to recover and prepare and we are looking forward to it."

Klopp, who pre-match admitted he had been impressed with £35million deadline day signing Oxlade-Chamberlain in recent days, felt the goal would be hugely beneficial to the England international.

He said: "It will open his chest. It will help him a lot. He could have scored two.”

"It was nice from Daniel (Sturridge) how he made this goal, really cool."

Maribor coach Darko Milanic, who had a horrendous 32 days in charge of Leeds in 2014, admitted his side just did not cope well with the early pressure.

He said: "The boys didn't look like themselves and after 20 minutes we had three goals against.

"It was very difficult for the players."
