Chelsea blew a two-goal lead amid claims by boss Conte that he has too many injured players and his squad is not big enough.

Mourinho watched his team beat Benfica 1-0 then said: “I never speak about injuries.

"Other managers they cry, they cry when a player is injured. If I wanted to moan I could cry like the others for five minutes: Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Rojo.”

The remarks by the former Chelsea boss infuriated frustrated Conte who has hit back and told Mourinho to butt out.

Conte said: “If he is speaking about me, I think he has to think about his team and start looking at himself, not others.

"I think that a lot of times Mourinho has to see what happens at Chelsea - a lot of time, also last season.”

Conte has been complaining that he is 'risking' his overworked players because he is forced to play the same ones over and over again.

GARDEN OF EDEN: Chelsea 3 Roma 3 - Eden Hazard and Edin Dzeko both score twice in thriller

Wind-up specialist Mourinho has clashed with Conte before. Last season he criticised Conte for whipping up the Chelsea fans during their 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United.

Chelsea supporters have also turned on their one-time hero and taunted him when he returned with his new club in an FA Cup tie at Stamford Bridge last season.

The feuding pair meet again at Stamford Bridge in just a few weeks’ time on November 5 – fireworks night.

Skipper Gary Cahill played much of the second half with a bandage wrapped around his head after taking a knock on the jaw but it is not considered serious.

Defender David Luiz was subbed as a precaution because of calf trouble with Chelsea already without inspirational midfielder N’Golo Kante and wing back Victor Moses for last night’s Group C match.

Chelsea salvaged a point through Eden Hazard’s headed equaliser and frustrated Conte admits he cocked up.

He said: “I like to be honest and, for sure, I didn't like the type of football that we did for a long part of the game.

"But it's right to take the responsibility for this because I tried, on the one hand, to protect my team and make us more solid, and to move Luiz into central midfield.

“But on the other hand we lost totally our knowledge and style of football. I didn't like this. At the end I think the result was fair but, in the first half, we were 2-0 up. But we weren't in control of the game.

“It's right to take the responsibility for this. But I repeat, sometimes, you have to find the right solution to try to protect your team.

"Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. But you know very well our situation.

"It was good to draw because Roma deserved this result. I have to praise my players because they showed me big effort, big commitment tonight, otherwise we'd have lost the game.”

Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko scored twice as Chelsea were themselves forced to come from behind and salvage a point through Eden Hazard 15 minutes from time and narrowly avoid a third successive defeat.

Chelsea stay top of Group C despite losing their 100 per cent record in the competition but now face two away games on the trot in Europe.

Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco said: “We could easily have secured the three points, but we mustn't forget we were two down after two individual mistakes.

"We took the game to Chelsea and really tried to win the match. This is the right mentality and, with this performance, we have to grow in awareness. Today we proved our character.”

“We know Edin scores lots of goals, but I'm especially happy with his approach and the service he gives the team. He had other chances today and might have scored more. It was a very good performance by him.”
