Chelsea boss Antonio Conte admits playing David Luiz in midfield against Roma was a mistake

Premier League champions almost lost against Italians despite taking a two-goal lead

ANTONIO CONTE admits his decision to play David Luiz in midfield against Roma backfired.

The Blues needed an Eden Hazard strike to rescue a point despite taking a two-goal lead at Stamford Bridge.

And Italian chief Conte has taken the blame for his side's lack of organisation.

He said: "I didn’t like the type of football we did for a lot of the game, but it’s right to take the responsibility for this.

"I tried on one hand to protect my team, to become more solid and to move our central defender into midfield.

"On the other hand we lost totally our style of football.

"Sometimes you have to find the right solution to try to protect your team. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. But you know very well our situation.

"It was good to draw. Roma deserved this result. I have to praise my players, because my players showed me a big effort, a big commitment tonight. Otherwise we lose the game."

N'Golo Kante's absence was keenly felt by Chelsea in the clash but they remain in control of their destiny despite a tough draw.

Conte's side lead Roma by two points, with Atletico Madrid trailing by five after a shoddy campaign.
