A victory over the country’s biggest club.
The last time they did that the queen had only been in the job a month.
But 55 years on a new generation of Town followers experienced a right royal afternoon they will never forget.
It was not long ago that their only hope of bringing the big stars of the Premiership to these parts was a favourable Cup draw.
Few are more famous than those donned in the red of United.
But you had to wonder if they had swapped shirts before kick-off the way the home team dominated this.
After opening the season with two wins Huddersfield had not won in their last six league games.
United by comparison had not lost a single game in 12 in three competitions winning ten and chalking up nine clean sheets.
Surely their was only one outcome.
But this is the Premier League, this is why it is loved world wide, because these things can happen.
The atmosphere was absolutely incredible in the first half.
There may have been just over 24,000 here but the home fans made the noise of three times that and the roof nearly came off when they took a 28th minute lead.
Aaron Mooy won the ball of Juan Mata on half way and sprinted up field before sliding a pass into Tom Ince.
He turned substitute Victor Lindelof inside out before having a shot from a narrow angle which David De Gea palmed away. But Mooy was there to hammer home the loose ball.
Just five minutes later the Terriers were in dreamland while Lindelof wanted the ground to swallow him up.
Goalkeeper Jonas Lossl hoofed the ball up field and Lindelof completely missed his header.
Lauren Depoitre was away rounding De Gea before slotting the ball into an unguarded goal.
Town chairman Dean Hoyle leapt to the air in celebration, what a moment.
At half time Denis Law was welcomed onto the pitch.
The last time United were here in 1971 was the final time he, Sir Bobby Charlton, also present, and George Best all scored in the same game.
The sight of Law, who began his career at Huddersfiled, must have left some United fans misty eyed given the paucity of their attacking threat yesterday.
Something that did not improve in the second-half.
Marcus Rashford pulled one back to make it a nervy ending for the Premier League new boys.
But it ended up an afternoon to forget for United but one Huddersfield fans never will.
Jose Mourinho: "The team that wanted it more won. When the best team wins there is nothing to say.
"I don't know why they wanted it more. I won’t be critical of my players in the media. I will analyse the game and, if I need to, I will criticise them.
"I was surprised by our performance, I was not expecting that. The team that started with emotion, aggression, intensity and desire, the team that played the game of their lives was the team that won.
"Maybe in the second half we wanted it a little more and maybe we could get a draw, but I honestly think we deserved the punishment of the defeat."
