MIDDLESBROUGH boss Garry Monk pleaded for calm after his side were booed off after slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff.
Boro have failed to win in five games and now sit ten points behind their second-placed opponents after a late Joe Ralls penalty sealed a dour game.
A reckless challenge on Nathaniel Mendez-Laing by substitute Adama Traore gifted the visitors an 84th minute penalty - and the star made no mistake from the spot.
Monk, who was again subjected to jeering and calls to bring on Patrick Bamford, admitted his Boro side are struggling to find form.
But he told fans: “It is clearly a frustrating period but that is a harsh result on us, 100 per cent.
“We knew it would not be a game of many chances, they are disciplined and well organised but we showed patience, we had the ascendancy and we looked like the ones who were going to win it.
“We understand the frustration of fans. We are as frustrated ourselves but what is clear is that we stick together. We need their support.
“You can see the spirit of the players and how committed they are. It is easy to lose focus on what we have done well but we are being punished for errors. We are close.”

Meanwhile, John Terry headed home his first goal for Aston Villa and Albert Adomah notched the winner as they defeated Fulham.
Stefan Johansen had pulled the visitors level before the former Boro win struck to earn the points.
Villa boss Steve Bruce said: “What can you say about John Terry? He’s 36 and he still keeps doing it.”
