And the world of social media went crazy.

Enda Curran wrote that "class is permanent", while ex-Everton man and Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker described it as "a cracker".

He also pointed out that it was 16 years almost to that day since "THAT goal" against Arsenal.

Rooney became the youngest ever goalscorer in the top flight when he beat David Seaman.

KEPT IN CECH Everton vs Arsenal: Petr Cech tells Wayne Rooney to forget about scoring landmark goal against him

Others decided to comment on the poor defending that let in the former England man.

Andrew Richardson wrote: "How slow is Granit Xhaka that he can't keep pace with an ageing Wayne Rooney",  and broadcaster and big Arsenal fan Piers Morgan was similarly as scathing.

He wrote: "I expect Xhaka to be useless, I don't expect Mertesacker to just stand there like a stuffed giraffe."

Wayne Rooney has now scored in 12 different calendar years against Arsenal.

And Xhaka came in for more criticism from another Twitter user who wrote: "You can’t give Wayne Rooney that type of space, otherwise he’ll punish you.

"Granit Xhaka, waste of money. Can’t defend or mark, shocking!"

However, it was the brilliance of Rooney's strike that deservedly grabbed most attention.

Gemma Cassidy, tweeting direct to Rooney himself, described him as "a legend of English football" before saying that "people should appreciate him for what he does on the pitch".

Steve Jones added that it was Rooney who was "saving Koeman's ass and job".
