Ronald Koeman breaks silence a day after Everton sacking and thanks board for ‘opportunity to have managed a great club’

RONALD KOEMAN has broken his silence a day after being sacked by Everton.

The Dutchman decided to post a statement on Twitter, where he thanked the club for "the opportunity to have managed a great club".

His statement read: "I would like to place on record my thanks to the players and staff for all of their work and commitment during my 16 months as Everton manager.

"I would like to thanks Bill Kenwright, Farhad Moshiri and the Everton board for the opportunity to have managed a great club, and to the fans as well for their passionate support for the club.

"Naturally, I am disappointed at this moment, but I wish the team good luck in the future."

The Toffees threw away a lead to lose 5-2 against Arsenal on Sunday and slip into the relegation zone despite their outrageous summer spending.

Koeman - spotted on Monday morning arriving early for training - oversaw a £150million outlay but has endured a shocking start to the term.

Everton said in a statement: "Everton Football Club can confirm that Ronald Koeman has left the club.

"Chairman Bill Kenwright, the board of directors and major shareholder Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the club over the past 16 months and for guiding the club to seventh place in last season’s Premier League campaign."

Koeman had guided the Toffees to a perilous 18th place in the table, with just TWO wins and five losses from their opening nine games.

SunSport reported earlier today how Phil Neville has put his hat in the ring for the Everton job - as the club confirmed David Unsworth is in temporary charge.

Former defender Unsworth will be in the dugout during their clash against Chelsea at in the Carabao Cup after Koeman's sacking.

Neville, 40, has previously worked as an assistant manager at Valencia and worked under David Moyes and Ryan Giggs at Manchester United.

The younger brother of former England defender Gary, Neville made 250 appearances for the Toffees over eight seasons after leaving Manchester United.

Among the managerial stars tipped for the job, former Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti, ex-Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel and current Burnley boss Sean Dychehave been named as potential suitors.

According to reports, former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs is also interested in both the vacant managerial roles at Goodison Park and Leicester.
