He was an unused substitute in the 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Swansea last night but doubts remained over his fitness.

But Jose Mourinho, speaking after the match, told Sky Sports: "There were no injuries either, so it is a good day.

"I believe that Phil Jones will be fit for Saturday against Tottenham, but apart from that I have no news."

United go into Saturday's fixture behind Manchester City in second and only above Spurs on goal difference.

The availability of Jones, who has started every Premier League match this season, will be a huge boost to Mourinho.

Victor Lindelof replaced the 25-year-old at the John Smith's Stadium and was partly at fault for the Terriers' first goal before his howler led to a second.

Former United star Mikael Silvestre slammed the Swede for his performance and fans laid into the £31million defender on Twitter.

He started alongside Chris Smalling at the Liberty Stadium last night and still looked shaky.

But Mourinho was pleased with his team's display, praising youngsters Scott McTominay and Axel Tuanzebe.

He said: "[Sergio] Romero and Smalling gave us good stability.

"We were in the game from the first minutes, pressing and forcing things, the attitude was good.

"Scott McTominay did very well, he was strong in the midfield. Tuanzebe started maybe a little shaky, but then we got stability and he came into it."

Swansea lost for the fifth time at home this season and face further misery after Martin Olsson limped off in the first half with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

Boss Paul Clement will today find out the extent of his injury after the left-back undergoes a scan.

Clement said: "If he's not OK for the weekend, then we have the option of playing [Kyle] Naughton there or [Sam] Clucas can fit in that position.

"We actually played better than we have been recently but Manchester United deserved to win the game, no question about that.

"They had the extra bit of quality and, from our point of view, we just have to believe a good result and good performance is around the corner.

"We have to show determination to get through this difficult time that we're having."
