Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho surprised but ‘happy’ with Ander Herrera damning assesment of Huddersfield defeat

Spaniard was critical of himself and team-mates after Huddersfield defeat but will need to bounce back at Old Trafford against Tottenham who are without Harry Kane

MANCHESTER UNITED Jose Mourinho revealed he was surprised but also happy with Ander Herrera’s damning verdict of United’s display at Huddersfield last weekend.

Mourinho publicly laid into his players after losing to the Premier League new boys citing their “poor attitude” and lack of hunger against the Yorkshire side.

Herrera admitted he and his United team-mates were not up to the task and were not as “aggressive or “passionate” than David Wagner’s side.

Mourinho spoked head of the clash with Tottenham, and despite reports he was not happy with the Spaniard’s comments, the United boss fine with what was said and denied he was critical of certain members of the squad.

He said: “I was surprised but happy about his words because it’s not easy for the players to recognise and admit.

“It shows dignity, it shows character and shows intelligence to know the reason why we lost the match.

"Contrary to some imaginary sources that tells you everything we do here, I can promise you that since that match I didn't speak one single second about the match, because no need, no need.

"After Ander's words and the feelings of all the players, I don't need speak about the words. Please, don't pay [attention] to the sources."

Mourinho also played down the Huddersfield defeat and backed his players to bounce back stronger from the setback, with his side to face top-six rivals Tottenham today.

The United boss continued: “To play bad and lose matches I think can happen again, it happens.

"During a season you can't play well all the time, you can't win all the time and you cannot even be lucky all of the time.

“So I think we are going to lose again. But in terms of the attitude that we didn't like, because I know the players and how good a people they are, I believe that was an isolated case."
