And his efforts in leading Wolves to the top of the Championship have not gone unnoticed on Merseyside, according to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

He wrote on Twitter: "Everton have contacted Nuno as one of the potential candidates to replace Koeman.

"His agent Jorge Mendes is listening, no decision made yet."

Nuno only took charge of Wolves at the end of May after he was sacked by Porto at the end of last season after just one campaign.

Since his arrival in the Midlands he has managed to knit together an expensively-assembled and cosmopolitan squad and guided them into top spot.

Wolves now look to be in with a great chance of returning to the top-flight, but they could face a fight to have Nuno lead them there.

If Balague is to be believed, Everton are seriously considering offering him the job at Goodison as they continue to try and find Ronald Koeman's replacement.

Nuno's agent Jorge Mendes is said to be seriously considering their offer as the coach weighs up his options.

Caretaker boss David Unsworth, who has led them to defeats against Chelsea and Leicester, will take charge of the Toffees at Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday.

They then face a home game in the Prem again Watford on Sunday before the two-week international break.

Despite declaring his interest in the job, Unsworth is not expected to be handed the job on a full-time basis.

Burnley chief Sean Dyche and Sam Allardyce remain the favourites to take over.

Everton hope to have someone in place for when their squad return from national duty.
