Will Everton be knocked out of the Europa League if they lose to Lyon?

Everton are in the last chance saloon as they travel to France looking to keep their Europa League hopes alive

EVERTON travel to Lyon as they look to keep their Europa League campaign alive.

While focus has been on the Toffees' poor Premier League form, they have also flopped on their return to European football, picking up just one point from three matches.

Following a 3-0 hammering away to Atalanta, Ronald Koeman's men were pegged back by a last minute Apollon Limassol equaliser at Goodison Park.

And in the last round Lyon were 2-1 winners in a match that was not as close as the scoreline suggested.

Will Everton be eliminated from the Europa League if they lose in Lyon?

If caretaker boss David Unsworth is unable to improve on the defeat suffered by Ronald Koeman against Lyon, Everton will go out if Atalanta avoid defeat away to Apollon Limassol.

The only was the Toffees could go through in the event of a defeat is if Apollon beat Atalanta in Cyprus tonight, but are then beaten by Lyon in the next match.

Everton would then have to beat Atalanta by four goals at Goodison Park and follow that up with a win in Cyprus in their final game, while hoping Lyon beat the Italians away.

What happens if Everton draw away to Lyon?

In the event of a draw, Everton will keep slim qualification hopes alive.

They would then need to win both their final matches to qualify, in combination with any of the following outcomes:

  • Atalanta lose all their remaining matches
  • Lyon pick up LESS THAN two points from matches against Atalanta and Apollon Limassol
  • Atalanta draw one of their matches and lose by four goals at Goodison Park

What will happen if Everton win?

If Everton win, they will be in with a reasonable chance of qualifying.

Ideally, the Toffees would need to win by any scoreline other than 1-0 or 2-1, which would see them finish above Lyon on head-to-head record if the two sides end up level on points.
