In the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu, Barca's sporting director Robert Fernandez gave the 21-year-old a glowing reference - even though he wasn't supposed to be scouting him.

The Evening Standard reports that Christian Eriksen was the man to check-up on, but it was Winks who made the lasting impression.

Then this week as Spurs secured a stunning 3-1 victory against Los Blancos, it was rookie England midfielder Winks who again caught the Barcelona scouts' eyes.

He started on the right of a midfield three, but showed his flexibility when he was told to sit deeper after centre-half Toby Alderweireld went off injured.

But Spurs will be confident of keeping their top talent.

Winks has already negotiated two new improved contracts in the last year with the London club, and is also a boyhood fan.

It will be no surprise if he commits his long term future to the club with a THIRD new deal in the next few months.

It was also Mauricio Pochettino who handed him his first-team debut for the club, against Partizan Belgrade in last season's Europa League competition.

Winks was called up to the England squad for their World Cup Qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania, performing well on debut against the latter.
