STEVE COOK’S injury-time header consigned Newcastle to ANOTHER 1-0 defeat.

The Toon lost by a goal to Burnley on Monday, following earlier defeats by the same scoreline to Huddersfield and Brighton.

And Cherriers defender Cook sunk the hosts in the 92nd minute as he nodded in Andrew Surman’s corner.

Boss Rafa Benitez will complain about Dwight Gayle having a 16th-minute strike wrongly ruled out for offside.

Yet Bournemouth deserved their second straight away win for their efforts in the second half, with Marc Pugh hitting the post just moments before Cook’s intervention.

Newcastle started brightly here, with Matt Ritchie looking inspired against his former club.

The Scotland international had a shot from out on the right tipped wide by Asmir Begovic.

Then he found Gayle with a pinpoint cross, with Cook getting his chest in the way of the recalled striker’s header.

Christian Atsu was next to the sting the gloves of Begovic.

And then when Ritchie struck the left post with a curling 20-yard effort, Gayle poked in but was wrongly flagged.

The Toon kept piling forward, with Atsu cutting inside from the left and striking on goal – but defender Cook again managed to block.

Yet, having survived the onslaught, Bournemouth began to carve out some efforts of their own, with Rob Elliot tipping over a Callum Wilson header, then stopping a shot from Joshua King.

After the break, Joselu wasted a header from Jonjo Shelvey’s corner – but the Cherries had a golden chance to open the scoring.

King caught Newcastle napping with a little clip over the top but Wilson, who was one-on-one with Elliot, fluffed his lines and blasted into the side netting.

Marc Pugh had a header saved by Elliot and then curled over with another effort, before striking the post in the 90th minute.

But Cook made amends to send Eddie Howe and his Cherries out of the bottom three.

WHAT THEY SAID

Bournemouth match-winner Steve Cook said: "We don't score enough goals from set plays and what a time to get it. It's a vital three points.

"First half Newcastle were brilliant, Asmir Begovic kept us in the game but we showed spirit. We were dogged and outstanding defensively."

Cherries boss Eddie Howe said: "It's a huge win. We were second best in the first half but we upped our game. We should have sealed the game earlier, we haven't been clinical enough all season but we got the points we deserved in the end.

"Callum Wilson was excellent today, you miss chances, it happens. We'll take any win, regardless of how they come.

"Back-to-back away wins are huge, our record has not been good. You need to know that you can win anywhere.

"It sets us up nicely, being out of the bottom three before the break."

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said: "It's always hard when you lose a game in the last minute.

"I have seen it [the disallowed Dwight Gayle goal] but it will not change anything. We have to understand that in these sort of games we have to do better.

"We have created chances in every game, you have to score. We have to keep going, we are Newcastle United, a good team that has been promoted.

"Maybe the break is good, we can keep working with the players. I was happy before the game with how we have been doing but disappointed now. It is still early."
