Manchester City joined by Everton in big-money fight for West Brom defender Jonny Evans

Baggies are ready to sell their skipper - but Prem rivals might need to pay a huge fee for a proven, home-grown centre-back

JONNY EVANS is at the centre of a  tug-of-war between Manchester City and Everton.

West Brom will sell their skipper and both Pep Guardiola and the managerless Toffees want him to prop up their defence — with the price set to be huge when the transfer window opens.

The Baggies scared off City last time by asking £35million for the Northern Ireland centre-back.

They are still keen despite their successful start but may only come in with a lower offer as they now have other options.

However Everton — even minus a boss — are firmly in the race and will look for Evans to join their struggling back line, with owner Farhad Moshiri willing to spend his way out of trouble.

It may come down to where Evans wants to go — heading back to Manchester to fight for a game in Guardiola’s high-fliers or a cert start with the lowly Merseysiders.

Either way Tony Pulis is bracing himself for the exit after fighting hard to keep Evans at the start of the season.

His campaign has been troubled by injury and the Baggies may  accept the big money rather than battle to hold on to him again.

Meanwhile, Everton are checking on Preston’s young left-back Josh Earl as they look for Leighton Baines’ long-term replacement.

Top spy Steve Walsh watched Earl against Brentford last week, although the chase has been slowed down a bit after the 6ft 5in prospect damaged knee ligaments in the following game against Aston Villa.
