Manchester United fans MUST get behind manager Jose Mourinho even though his football ‘isn’t exciting’, says former chairman

Martin Edwards admits Mourinho's style is not like that of Sir Alex Ferguson, but 'he wins trophies'

MANCHESTER UNITED fans should get behind boss Jose Mourinho - even though his brand of football isn't "exciting".

That's the opinion of former United chairman Martin Edwards, who was quick to point out that Mourinho has already won two trophies in his first season.

Speaking on the Warm Down podcast, Edwards said: "Mourinho has never had a reputation necessarily of being an attacking manager, even with Chelsea.

"He is a successful manager, he wins trophies, but even the Chelsea sides I wouldn't describe them as exciting, even when they were at their peak and winning trophies.

"But he is a manager who knows how to win.

"Even last year some of the football at Old Trafford I wouldn't say was vastly exciting at home, some of it was quite ordinary, but he comes away with two trophies at the end of the season.

"That European Cup was a hard slog, it's seven home games and seven away games.

"I thought he did exceptionally well with his tactics in the final, so he does know how to win.

"But he wins in a certain style, and it's probably not the style that a lot of United supporters are used to."

United have never really replaced the legend that is Sir Alex Ferguson when he decided to call it a day at the end of the 2012/13 season.

And while Mourinho has a different style to the great Scot, Edwards believes he deserves time to deliver success.

He added: "It's not the style of Sir Matt, or Tommy Docherty or Ron Atkinson or Alex Ferguson, but he wins trophies, he is successful.

"We did start the season very well, but then we go and park the bus at Liverpool.

"I think a lot of people felt at Liverpool that we should have gone out to win, they were vulnerable and that was the one to go for.

"But it's early days, he's had one season, he's won two trophies, I think he deserves every chance now, let's judge him over a longer period."

Edwards was chairman at United between 1980 and 2002, presiding over some trophy-laden times with Sir Alex at the helm.
