West Ham chief David Sullivan admits the appointment of David Moyes as Hammers boss is a ‘gamble’

Sunderland and Man Utd flop been handed a six-month deal to help save Irons from Premier League relegation

WEST HAM chief David Sullivan admitted the appointment of David Moyes is “a gamble”.

Talking exclusively to SunSport, Sullivan insisted Moyes has a point to prove after succeeding Slaven Bilic as Hammers boss.

Co-owner Sullivan said: “This is a gamble but let’s see where we are at the end of the season. I believe he will keep us up.

“I have promised him nobody else has been lined up, that we have not signed another manager for next season.

“This is his job and he has to grab it. It is a big chance for him.

“You don’t do what he did at Everton for ten years and become a bad manager — he is a good manager.

“He did not make this about money. It is about re-establishing himself, taking his chance and keeping West Ham in the Premier League.”

Moyes, 54, has been handed an initial six-month contract.

JOB FOR THE MOYES David Moyes offered eye-watering bonus to keep West Ham up

And the former Manchester United boss conceded he has to repair his battered image after two sackings and a relegation in his last three jobs.

The Scot said: “I’m hungry to make sure I get things right now.

“I don’t know any manager who hasn’t gone through negative periods. I hope it gives me great strength and understanding of what is required.”

It is Moyes’ first job since being relegated with Sunderland last season, having being axed from United and Real Sociedad.

Yet his successful time at Everton has persuaded Sullivan and joint-chairman David Gold he is the man to save their season.

Moyes told talkSPORT: “It is a contract which suits both parties.

“Let’s get the job done and then talk at the end of the year.

“I’m thrilled to be back in the game.

“Hopefully I can show what I’m really about.”

Moyes wants former Hammers and England full-back Stuart Pearce on his coaching team, along with Alan Irvine, his No 2 at Everton.

Moyes added: “We’ve got a good squad. They should be in a better position than they are.

“West Ham supporters are a very passionate group and we need them behind us.”

Moyes will be without Portuguese defender Jose Fonte, 33, until the New Year after his ankle surgery on Monday.
