Alexandre Lacazette’s mission to transform his World Cup hopes can boost Arsenal – starting against Tottenham in the crunch derby
ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE is on a World Cup mission and Arsenal should benefit — starting with Saturday’s North London derby.
The French hotshot, 26, has made a steady start at the Emirates following a £44million summer move from Lyon with six goals in 11 games.
But Lacazette has not always enjoyed the confidence of Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps.
His double in the 2-2 draw with world champions Germany on Tuesday night has put him firmly back in contention for a place in the squad for Russia 2018.
Lacazette, who often plays second fiddle to clubmate Olivier Giroud at international level, said: “It was one of the first matches for France when I was played as a true centre-forward, my preferred position, in a big game.
“So that was pleasing. Also there is a long period now without a match for the France team, so I am pleased to have left a good impression.
“What I must do now is get back to work for my club and be fit and available to play, and do a good job for Arsenal in the coming months.
“There is no doubt that was my best match for France and the coach told me I had done well.
'SEE WHERE WE GO' Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he may not see out his current contract as end-of-season talks with board are revealed
“He also had a joke with me as I left the pitch which will stay a secret.
But he congratulated me and it is very encouraging — it was a good night for me.”
Lacazette twice shot France in front in Germany - his opener following superb footwork from Manchester United frontman Anthony Martial.
But Timo Werner finished off Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil's pass for the first leveller on 56 minutes.
Then substitute Lars Stindl made it 21 games unbeaten for Germany with a fine near-post finish three minutes into stoppage time.
