SunBets had Van Gaal priced at between 33/1 and 25/1 on Sunday - before a rush of wagers saw those odds slashed to just 5/1.

David Unsworth has been in temporary charge of the Toffees since Ronald Koeman was sacked on October 23.

Veteran manager Van Gaal has been out of a job since leaving Manchester United in 2016.

The 66-year-old, who has won won seven league titles in three countries, was criticised for his boring brand of football during his two years at Old Trafford.

Some of his transfer business was also criticised, with Angel Di Maria never settling at the club and the likes of Luis Nani and Robin van Persie sold on the cheap.

Watford manager Marco Silva remains the bookies' favourite to move to Goodison park, but the Hornets are determined to hold on to the talented young boss.

The Hertfordshire club have said they will not release Silva for "any price", with Everton having bids of £8million and £10m previously rejected.

Caretaker boss Unsworth continues to be linked with the job, although he has won only one of his five matches in charge.

Van Gaal won three Eredivisie titles, as well as the 1995 Champions League, in a stunning spell with Ajax in the 1990s.

He also won two La Liga titles with Barcelona, as well as another Eredivisie title with AZ Alkmaar.

At Bayern Munich, the Dutchman won the Double in 2010, before leading the Netherlands to the World Cup semi-final in 2014.

However, his time at Manchester United was a disappointment.

Taking over from David Moyes' disastrous spell, Van Gaal could only manage fourth and fifth place finishes in the Premier League, crashing out at the group stage of the Champions League in his second season.

Van Gaal managed to win the FA Cup in his final match in charge at Old Trafford, but it was little consolation after a near-£300million spending spree.
