The Merseysiders have earmarked Watford boss Marco Silva as their top target, however the Hornets have rejected several approaches for the highly-rated Portuguese coach.

Unsworth has been in the hot seat for three Premier League games and Saturday’s draw at Palace left them 16th in the table.

And Barton who stuck the boot into Unsworth last month claiming the Everton coach looked like a “glorified PE teacher” insists the club have become embarrassing and must appoint a new manager to arrest their slide.

Barton blasted on talkSPORT: “He’s a former defender and he can’t set his team up to defend.

“They’ve shipped at least two goals in every game he’s been in charge.

“The facts are that Unsworth is technically, tactically and strategically miles away.

N-EVER HAPPENING Watford ‘will not release boss Marco Silva for any price’ as Everton ponder ANOTHER approach

“If Everton stay with him, they’re going to get relegated, there’s no doubt about it."

Barton added:“They need a proper manager who is going to come in quickly and he’s going to change the culture into a winning one.

“If that’s Marco Silva and they’re able to get him out of Watford then so be it.

“What they need is a quick and decisive decision.

“David Unsworth is not the man for the job, it’s nothing personal against him, he is not the man based on experience and strategy.

“Everton need to do their business and do it quickly, because they’re turning into an embarrassment.”

Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri didn't escape Barton on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show and was blasted for reports Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simoene is on Everton's short list.

Barton contintued: "Diego Simeone? As if he’s going to join Everton.

"They’re not even in the Champions League, what is he going to leave Atletico Madrid for?

“It was embarrassing for the football club and embarrassing for the fans.

"Liverpool have got enough to laugh at without that load of nonsense coming out of the club.".

The boyhood Toffees fan added: “Everton are a great club with a proud supporter base and this Moshiri investment was what the fans believed to be a unique opportunity to become a major force in Europe again - back to the days of the 80’s when Everton were a major player at Europe’s top table."
