Mourinho showed his support for the 36-year-old - who's contract expires in the summer -  after his team's 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday and insisted he will have a future at Old Trafford in the backroom when he decides to hang up his boots.

Mourinho said: "There is a seat [in the coaching staff] waiting for Carrick. I want that, the board wants that, the owners want that.

"It is waiting for him, so he is in a comfortable situation [regarding his future]."

Carrick's main focus for now is recovering and building up fitness "to be back in contention for selection soon."

Mourinho added: "Michael, as a person, is more important than Michael as a player. We gave him the time to relax, to recover, to feel confident, to make the decision [when he] wants to play, [when he] wants to stop.

"But he wants to be a player until the end of the season and now he feels confident to be back and now he is training back with us.

"So [he is]one more option for us, we need players and Michael wants to play so I am happy with that."

Carrick had a procedure called Cardiac Ablation after tests revealed he had an irregular heart rhythm and hasn't featured in a match day squad since United's win over Southampton on September 23.

In his statement, Carrick said he felt "strange" during the second half against Burton on September 1 which prompted the series of tests.

The United and England skipper has already taken steps towards his future career after his playing days come to an end.

He has taken his coaching badges and has already worked with United's youngster's.
