The 22-year-old has seen his stock rise dramatically after a number of outstanding performances for club and country over the past year.

He has also attracted the attention of some of European football's top sides including Arsenal and Manchester United.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also been keeping an eye on the midfielder.

The Germany international is heading towards free agency as his Schalke contract runs down.

“I have to find out for myself what the next step should be,” he told reporters following Schalke’s 2-2 draw with Cologne.

“I have to consider a million things. I am a person who is very meticulous in such decisions. I play through all the scenarios. So I need time.

“There doesn’t exist a deadline, but I think we are in the final phase.

“The final decision will be made in January.”

The midfielder has also created a storm of controversy after headbutting Cologne's Salih Ozcan.

Unbelievably, the midfielder escaped any punishment after ramming his head into the chest of his opponent - despite the referee being right next to him.

Goretzka told Sky Sport: "The referee is right next to it. If he had seen assassination, he would have pulled me aside.

"I just want to get up impulsively. I admit that it looks unfortunate. But it was certainly not intentional, I did not want to injure him. My name is not Zinedine Zidane. It is unnecessary to discuss it."
