And he held off competition from Chelsea's Eden Hazard and Manchester United winger turned full-back Ashley Young.

Egyptian international Salah took 54 per cent of the vote after making the six-man shortlist.

Young trailed on 18 per cent but could scoop an even bigger prize after excelling at left-back.

The former Aston Villa star will be in contention for a World Cup call-up if he can keep up his performances.

Ashley Young scores stunner for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho's reaction is class

Before the win over Brighton, he said: “I am not interested.

“I like Luis Suarez’s attitude and style of play but he is not a Liverpool player any more.

“I respect him a lot. He is a Liverpool legend. He is a fantastic player, still a fantastic player.

“It’s not that I have to compare players. We have another player in Mo who has had a big impact on performances. It’s a story for social media and newspapers, I am not a little bit interested in it.”
