But in their big Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow tonight, the Englishman starts, with Mourinho confirming that he deserved his chance.

According to "leaked" team news confirmed the 22-year-old will start in a five-man defence, his first start since coming off injured after nine minutes against Swansea in April.

United's starting XI was named as: Sergio Romero, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Daley Blind, Shaw, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Juan Mata.

United are top of the Champions League group A going into their clash with CSKA - and a point will see them through.

Shaw has had a nightmare season, only playing 45 minutes against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup and four minutes in the same competition against Swansea City.

Mourinho said yesterday: "When you speak about Luke you are right, he is working to have an opportunity and sooner or later the opportunity will arrive, because he deserves the opportunity.
