Full-back Fabio, 27, joined Boro from Cardiff last year. He spent five seasons at Old Trafford, and also had a spell on loan to QPR.

The twice-capped Brazil international said: "It makes me sad to see the state the country is in.

"If things were better, both from the political and the violence points of view, I would have returned a long time ago.

"The quality of life is good in England. But it is cold and rains all the time - and there are few things for me to do.

"I am very active, and I like going to the beach, playing volleyball and going out with friends. I wanted to go back to Brazil.

Fabio also said he dreams of playing for Brazilian club Botafogo alongside his twin brother Rafael.

He added: "I've always been a Botafogo fan. It is my dream to play for them.
