LA Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid said: "We are very excited that Ashley will be returning for us in 2018.

"He’s been a tremendous leader for our club.

"He’s shown he can be successful in this league and we’re confident that will continue in the season ahead."

Cole moved to America in January 2016 and has made 55 appearances since signing for Galaxy.

He made an instant impact by helping them to record the joint-second best defensive record in the league during his first campaign.

Prior to heading Stateside he won a host of honours in England, capturing four Premier League titles, seven FA Cups and the Champions League with Arsenal and the Blues.

The left-back began his career with the Gunners and enjoyed a spell on loan at Crystal Palace before establishing himself in Arsene Wenger's side.

Cole caused controversy when he left the North London side for rivals Chelsea in 2006 and became a hate figure for the Emirates faithful.

Despite that, he went on to become one of the Stamford Bridge side's greatest-ever players during his eight years with them, before he joined Italian side Roma in 2014.

Things did not go to plan for the veteran in Serie A and he left the Stadio Olimpico for Los Angeles after just two years.

He will be joined at Galaxy by new signings Rolf Feltscher, Jorgen Skjelvik and David Bingham.

They begin the 2018 season at the StubHub Centre on Sunday, March 4 against Portland Timbers.
