SUNDERLAND boss Chris Coleman is in talks with Burnley about a surprise move for veteran striker Jon Walters.
Coleman wants warhorse Walters to lead the survival fight.
And he is negotiating a loan deal that could become permanent if the Black Cats stay up.
Republic of Ireland regular Walters has hardly featured for Burnley in an injury-hit campaign.
And Sunderland are hoping he could be interested in the chance to play regularly.
Coleman has lost already been dealt a huge blow this month with top scorer Lewis Grabban being recalled by Bournemouth.
The former Wales boss could also send James Vaughan on loan to Wigan.
That leaves him desperately needing players in and hopes to tie up a deal quickly for Walters.

And he is also hoping to bring in Liverpool babe Ben Woodburn, who he handed an international debut to last year, on loan too.
Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp and the Merseyside club chiefs are assessing all options before deciding on the best location to send the 18-year-old.

Burnley will let Walters go after buying him for £3 million in the summer.
So they also want the Wearsiders to commit to a full-time transfer if Walters pays off.
Sunderland are deep in trouble in the Championship and face a huge fight to avoid a second-successive relegation.
They are currently rooted to the bottom and have won just four league matches this campaign.
