Ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool star Xabi Alonso investigated over alleged Spanish tax fraud

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder, who retired at the end of last season, was also looked into from 2010-12

SPANISH authorities have re-opened their case against Xabi Alonso for alleged tax fraud.

An initial investigation was carried out in September 2015, where undeclared income in relation to image rights was discovered.

But the prosecutor's office filed an appealed the order issued, claiming it was "premature".

However, El Mundo report the case now be re-opened.

Alonso was originally part of a two year investigation for tax fraud, which lasted from 2010 to 2012, while he was playing for Real Madrid.

He was again at the centre of a case in February 2016, but insisted he had complied with the "legal vigilance".

Alonso started his career at Real Sociedad before becoming one of Rafa Benitez's first signings at Liverpool in 2004.

In five seasons at Anfield, he won the Champions League and FA Cup, before leaving to join Real Madrid.

And he enjoyed incredible success in the Spanish capital, with a league title in 2012, before winning the Champions League again in his final season.

In 2014, he joined Bayern Munich where he stayed for three seasons — claiming a Bundesliga title in each.
