And according to the Northern Echo, Benitez hopes the collapse of takeover talks between Ashley and Amanda Staveley will work in his favour.

Chelsea winger Kenedy is a target and Benitez is also desperate to bring in a keeper, having switched between Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow this season.

Offloading players could allow for some fresh faces to be brought in.

West Ham have been linked with a £12million move for Jonjo Shelvey while Fulham - who could sell Newcastle target Tom Cairney for £20m this month - want Dwight Gayle.

The British Reuben family had agreed financial terms to support the Yorkshirewoman's bid but after Ashley ended talks they have said they will no longer be involved, according to the Guardian.

A representative of Staveley revealed that the London-based Reuben family is one of her co-investors.

She reportedly has £28BN in funds from investors worldwide but had plans to buy Newcastle mostly herself.

A spokesperson for Reuben Brothers said: "It is true that we did have a look at it, but nothing actually happened.

"We are not investing in Newcastle United either as Reuben Brothers or as any individuals."
