Roy Hodgson appointed Crystal Palace manager after Frank de Boer’s sacking with Eagles pointless in Premier League

CRYSTAL Palace have appointed former England boss Roy Hodgson, aged 70, as manager after sacking Frank de Boer.

De Boer was given the boot on Monday, only 77 days into a three-year contract, after pointless Palace made the worst start to a top flight season since Preston 93 years ago.

Hodgson becomes the oldest manager in Premier League history, and the oldest manager appointment in the entire league since 1953.

Palace chairman Steve Parish offered Hodgson a two-year contract worth £2.5million a year, with a bonus of £1million of he keeps the club up this season.

Parish confirmed the appointment on his Instagram page on Tuesday evening with a picture of Hodgson in a Palace shirt.

Born in Croydon, Hodgson spent three years on Palace's books as a young defender in the 1960s before leaving without making an appearance.

His return brings his career full circle, in what could prove his last job after he resigned as England manager after the team's shambolic defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Roy Hodgson's 41-year career as manager

  • Born in Croydon on August 9, 1947
  • Was a youth player at Crystal Palace, but never played in the first-team - his playing career took him around non-League
  • Took his first managerial job at just 29 in Sweden with Halmstad in 1976
  • Enjoyed a nomadic managerial career, mostly out of England, that has seen him take charge of 15 clubs and four nations
  • Has won seven Swedish titles with Halmstad (two) and Malmo (five), as well as the Danish title with Copenhagen
  • Led Switzerland to the last-16 of the 1994 World Cup, their first international tournament since 1966
  • Got to the final of the Uefa Cup with Inter Milan in 1997
  • Had a disastrous spell with Blackburn Rovers in the late 1990s - would not manage in England for another decade
  • Was a left-field choice to replace Lawrie Sanchez, but helped Fulham to one of the best spells in their history, finishing a best-ever seventh in 2009 and reaching the final of the Europa League in 2010
  • Moved to Liverpool but lasted just 31 games in a dismal reign
  • Replaced Roberto Di Matteo at West Brom, avoiding relegation and leading the Baggies to their best finish in three decades
  • Left for the England job after Fabio Capello resigned in the build-up to Euro 2012 - where the Three Lions lost on penalties to Italy in the quarter-final
  • Qualified unbeaten for the 2014 World Cup, but in Brazil dismal performances saw England finish bottom of their group, below Costa Rica
  • Hodgson then led England to Euro 2016, winning all 10 of their qualifiers
  • But the tournament was again a disaster, knocked out by minnows Iceland in one of the most embarrassing defeats in English football history
  • Hodgson quit as England manager minutes after the Iceland defeat and has not worked since

Hodgson last worked in the Premier League with West Brom in 2012, before leaving to become England manager.

A year earlier he had inspired them, as he did with similarly relegation-threatened Fulham in 2007/08, to survival.

Between his time at Fulham and West Brom, Hodgson also had an unsuccessful spell at Liverpool that lasted only six months.

Palace's board lost faith in 47-year-old De Boer's ability to improve results after failing to win a single point during his 77 days in charge.
